The Role
CAA Basketball is looking for an Operations & Data Analyst to be involved in all aspects of the Basketball Group’s on-court workflow. The ideal candidate is a hard-working, organized individual with the unique ability to transform complex statistical information into captivating presentations. This role varies from creative to analytical and requires mastery in distilling significant amounts of information into work-product that is digestible for clients, prospective clients, and NBA teams. This person is responsible for the development of materials to enhance the group’s capacity in new client recruitment and NBA Free Agency. The candidate must have a deep understanding of the game of basketball, the evolving nature of the NBA’s business model, and knowledge relating to player evaluation tools and methods.
This position reports to directly to CAA Basketball’s Director of Basketball Operations and to its Chief Operating Officer. There is opportunity for career growth, and it is hoped that the successful candidate will grow within CAA Sports over time.
Responsibilities
Bolster and help manage CAA Basketball’s existing data infrastructure
Augment and enhance CAA Basketball’s player evaluation methods and procedures – both via traditional scouting and analytics
Optimize CAA Basketball’s salary cap management processes.
Create and design complex data presentations with deep understanding of layout, typography and visual hierarchy
Synthesize large swaths of data to efficiently communicate with group of certified Player Agents
Contribute to a variety of research, analytical, and statistical needs
Assist with special projects and research geared towards new client recruitment
Assist with research and preparation for NBA Free Agency
Work with Agents, Executives, Coordinators and Assistants across the Department and the company to complete projects and handle incoming requests
Serve as a point of contact for clients and executives
Stay up to date on the professional basketball industry
Qualifications
BA/BS from an accredited university; major in Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, or a related quantitative field is a plus
Prior basketball-industry experience or published material that showcases exceptional knowledge of the basketball industry
Proficient in PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel (spreadsheets, VLookup, Pivot Tables, etc) visual graphics; experience with video analytics, R, SQL, Python preferred
Experience building data models and using data to tell stories and influence decision-makers
Ability to take direction and work independently with an extreme attention to detail
Flexible and adaptable; able to stay organized while meeting quick deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Effective presentation skills with the ability to clearly articulate ideas
Graphic design aptitude with knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, KeyNote a plus
Proficiency with NBA Analytics and quantifying player value. Must be able to understand the NBA’s statistical landscape and be able to sophisticatedly communicate with industry experts on the topic
Understanding of the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. Must be able to understand the NBA’s business landscape and be able to sophisticatedly communicate with industry experts on the topic
Knowledge of the NBA’s scouting landscape
And, of course, a knowledge and love of sports and sports culture!
